This year Groovin’ steps up bigtime with the addition of not one, but two very “Special Performances”!
“Groovin’ in the Park ” is the Deltaville Maritime Museum’s casual , outdoor, concert series held in our Waterfront Park on Mill Creek. Groovin’ is a “bring your own lawn chair and picnic” event. Hot Food and cold beverages are available. The gates will always be open 1 hour before the concerts for picnicking.
What a musical kickoff we have for you.
On opening weekend Saturday, May 2nd, the barely controlled chaos of “Elana Lisa and the Hot Mess” celebrate “Mardi Gras in May” as the band costumes up New Orleans style. The first 100 thru the gate will get Mardi Gras necklaces and Bistro East is working on a specialty drink Mardi Gras style. www.elanalisa.com/elhm
As the Museum concert series enters its second decade of bringing music to our park and community with the 7 concert “Groovin’ in the Park’ casual, outdoor music series, we are proud to announce 2 “Special Performance” concerts this year.
After having “Good Shot Judy” on our musical wish list for a couple of years, we are excited to welcome their big band sound and show to our stage on June 27th. If you haven’t had the pleasure yet, GSJ is a one-of-a kind. Check them out at goodshotjudy.com/ . The “Honeywind Bluegrass Boys” open for GSJ at 5pm. This concert will be sponsored in part by Hawkins Boat Brokerage in Deltaville.
On July 25th Groovin’ will travel back in time to the late 60’s era of “Monterey Pop”, “Altamont”, Miami, the “Newport Folk Festival” and all the other of the big music festivals of the mid and late 60’s where iconic performers and bands like Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Joan Baez, Richie Havens, Grateful Dead, Jimmy Hendrix, and Janis Joplin played before thousands. In a 5-8pm, 3 hour show Virginia’s own Steve Bassett and his “large” band, along with local musicians Clayton Neal and Paige Melton bring back the songs of one of these iconic festivals and recreate the actual music and “feel” of the “Age of Aquarius”.
On Memorial Day Saturday we have our annual visit from Billboard blues superguitarist Bobby Messano(Welcome to Deltaville) with opener Ray Pittman. The unbeatable reggae sounds of “Stuck on a Name” take the stage on August 22nd with the wonderful “Flat-tones opening. The Labor Day weekend Bonus Groovin’ on Saturday will showcase the old standards performed by Sharon Rae North and the Josh Walker Trio with openers Toby Gillie and the “Unpredictables”. The “Tom Euler Band” featuring everybody’s local favorite Tom Euler will send Groovin’out in style for the Sept. 26th final 2020 concert.
Due to increased expenses, the 2 “Special Performance” concerts will be $15 in advance and $20 at the door. As you all know, Groovin’ is one of the Maritime Park’s major fundraisers. The other five regular concerts will hold the 2019 price, $10 in advance and $15/door. Remember, there is always the possibility of a sell-out this year so please get your tickets early. Tickets are available at the Museum office, online or at Nauti-Nells in Deltaville.
